In 1964, Chuck Lyford entered his highly modified P-51D "Bardahl Special" in the 2254 mile Harold's Club Transcontinental Race from St Petersburg, Florida to Reno, Nevada taking second place. The streamlined A-1 Skyraider external fuel tanks used only for cross country flights, were so large on the much smaller Mustang, they almost looked like pontoons at first glance.

Chuck was famous in the Northwest as an airshow performer, air race pilot, hydro-driver, car racer, and seemed great at everything he did. He was full of fantastic stories, and I treasure the few hours I spent with him.
