California ANG
Flying out of Van Nuys airport, this North American Aviation F-51D Mustang was assigned to the 146th FG in 1951. Its assigned mission was to provide air defense over California and give these weekend warriors enough flight hours to stay current and coincidentally prepare for the coming conflict in Korea. Ironically, the recent USAF designation change from P (pursuit) to F (fighter) seems a bit premature as the Mustangs main role in Korea would be providing ground support with bombs, rockets and .50 caliber machine guns.
