Paul Mantz, 1939 Bendix
For the 1939 Bendix Trophy cross country race, Paul Mantz refined his Lockheed Model 9 Orion entry with a new NACA cowl featuring tear drop fairings over the engine cylinders. He finished the race with a respectable third place speed of 234.875 mph. Always a savvy self-promoter, the plane carried large advertising for its use as an aerial camera platform in filming the movie "Men With Wings", which starred Fred MacMurry, Ray Milland, Louise Campbell and Andy Devine. This airframe, which had wooden wings and tails and a metal fuselage is now the last surviving Orion on display wearing Swissair markings in a Swiss air museum. This painting was featured in the June 2023 issue of Air Classics magazine.
