In 1959, most USAF fighters were still allowed to carry colorful markings. Here, the CO of the 436th TFS of the 479th TFW, leads his group of Lockheed F-104C Starfighters through some close formation training at contrail altitude.

As a kid, the Starfighter was the most astounding futuristic aircraft design I had ever seen. I still think it was the most beautiful fighter ever built. Please note, I always strive for accuracy in my paintings, but… while researching these markings I found a lot of published information (color profiles) that appears to me to be incorrect when compared to the few color photos available. Most of my references show white outlines against the yellow markings (the same as found in the red and blue squadrons) but the photos show it to be black against the yellow. I thought the black version was much better visually so I went that way.
