During WWII, US Navy primary trainers were not equipped with radios as they were considered an unwarranted expense. Since weather predictions were seldom far ahead of the actual weather events, a few aircraft were given special "Recall " paint schemes, so that students would know to "land now!" when they saw these unmistakable markings.
