"The Duck"
This painting depicts a USN Grumman J2F-5 Duck heading out for an anti-submarine patrol in the South Pacific. The amphibious Duck was an awkward looking plane on its landing gear and had a bit of a duck waddle when taxiing. When in seaplane configuration it was a well-balanced looking airplane that had excellent handling and performance. The last biplane built by the Grumman Aircraft Company, it was very successful at many tasks, especially as an air/sea search and rescue platform. There is some great footage of a duck flown by Hollywood legendary stunt pilot Frank Tallman in the film "Murphy's War" that inspired a lifelong love of the Duck for me.
