The Last Hamp

When I was commissioned to do this painting of the last Mitsubishi A6M3, Type 0 Carrier Fighter, Model 32 Zero, it was several years from its first flight. I was fortunate to live nearby the project and I was able to watch the progress of this extremely rare aircraft. It is easily recognized by the squared off wing tips and different engine cowl and exhaust.

Bob Hammer and the crew of Legend Flyers did a magnificent job restoring the “Hamp” for its new owner, the Military Aviation Museum. As of May 2025, it is undergoing flight testing at Paine Field, Everett Washington.

Aircraft 3148 was manufactured in 1942 and was funded by the Manshukoku Chuto Gakko Go, a middle school in Manchuria and had graphics applied to the fuselage referencing the school. 3148 is the last flyable Model 32 and the only surviving wartime built presentation Zero.

It was assigned to the Japanese Air Group 252 Kyutai, 22nd Air Flotilla. 3148 initially operated from the aircraft carrier Taiyo during the defense of Guadalcanal between November 1942 and February 1943.

Original painting sold and is part of the collection of Jim Larsen.
